Re-pot your orchids in 4 easy steps:

Water your orchid a few days before you re-pot, so that the roots are smooth and flexible and so won’t be prone to breaking or damage.
-
Take a new, slightly larger pot – ideally with drainage holes – and partially fill the bottom with a layer of special SERAMIS Orchid mix. Use enough mix so that when the orchid is placed on top, it will be at the right height relative to the top of the pot.
-
Gently remove the orchid from its current pot by turning the pot upside down and gently tapping it. If the plant refuses to come out, it may be easier to break or cut the pot open. Carefully remove the old excess orchid potting mix from the roots and trim off any dead roots – healthy roots are firm and white with light green growing tips, dead roots are soft and brown. Use very clean garden scissors or shears to trim and avoid any possible infection to the roots. See Plant Care Tips for trimming orchid roots.
-
Place the orchid in the pot, apply a slight twist to get the orchid roots in place, and fill around the plant with SERAMIS Orchid Potting Mix, gently tapping the pot to settle the mixture until it just covers the roots and using your fingers to press around the roots firmly. See Plant Care Tips for where to place your orchid depending on the species. Sometimes it’s best to secure the plant in place with a stake and clip.
-
Water the orchid, ensuring any excess water is allowed to drain away. Place it in the right location and give it the right supply of essential nutrients. See Plant Care Tips for Caring for Orchids.
When to re-pot orchids
Orchids should be re-potted every 12-18 months as typically the old substrate tends to break down and compact the delicate roots. In re-potting your orchids, you also provide fresh nutrients and allow the roots room to grow and expand, bringing new vigour to your plant and ensuring healthy leaves and long lasting vibrant flowers.
Most of the popular orchids seen today originally came from a habitat where they naturally grow on the branches of trees. So orchids don’t grow in soil, and you should never use soil or peat to re-pot them.
Re-potting should be done ideally before flowering has started. Re-potting is usually done to move the plant into a bigger pot and allow for more growth, but also it can be because the substrate has compacted and is preventing air to get to the roots. With SERAMIS Orchid Mix, this compaction does not happen as its unique combination of clay granules and durable high quality pine bark means that it maintains its structure over many years.
Choosing the right orchid potting mix for more beautiful, healthy orchids.
Seramis® Orchid Potting Mix is specially developed to provide the ideal habitat for your orchid. Orchids are naturally equipped with roots than can grow in the air and so regular potting soil is not suitable for orchids. The roots need to be in an orchid potting mix that is loose and open enough to give the roots air to breathe, and one which does not hold on to excess water – as the delicate roots are susceptible to water-logging, so the potting mix needs to be capable of draining freely.
SERAMIS® Orchid Mix is a unique blend of our specially produced pure clay granules and high-quality pine bark, with just the right balance of micronutrients for healthy, vibrant growth. The loose and open structure provides optimal aeration and allows excess water to drain freely. The special clay granules have exceptional ability to store water and nutrients, releasing them to the plant’s roots as needed and providing the right amount of moisture without saturating the roots. Roots stay healthy, plump and alive. The specially developed SERAMIS® Orchid Plant Food provides your orchid with the correct nourishment and a balanced supply of nutrients needed for strong leaves and vibrant blooms – every time you water.
